Are poetry and literature changing in response to the Black Lives Matter movement and other efforts to increase equity, diversity and inclusion in the world? What roles and responsibilities do poets have in documenting history and reflecting contemporary society? What do you see as the future for writing and publishing? An author of more than 25 books of fiction and poetry, Gary holds a PhD in music composition and remains a prolific mentor to and collaborator with artists in a multitude of genres and fields.

We all begin with a love of poetry. As we grow up, however, that love can fade. Language becomes practical rather than fanciful, and we may start to think of words not as amusing sounds we make but rather as tools we can put to use. Poetry is play I. All poets play with language. Perhaps T. Poetry is play II. Poetry also grants us the freedom to add new words to our language much in the way painters add new paintings to museums.

Shakespeare, in fact, is thought over the course of his career to have created nearly 2, new words. Poetry is music in language. For Lewis Carroll as well as many other poets, the sounds words make are just as important as the meanings they have.

Poetry teaches patience. A handwritten, personalised or recited poem can be a rare and treasured gift. A poem can be immortal.
